Sight Seeing

The Stupa of Swayambhunath is believed to be 2,000 years old, is one of the sacred places for Newari Buddhists. Buddhists visit the stupa on the Buddhist festivals like Buddha Purnima and Tibetan Losar or the New Year. The Pashupatinath Temple is situated on the banks of River Baghmati. At a distance of 8 km from the city, it is one of the most venerated Hindu shrines. The temple is dedicated to Lord Shiva and only Hindus are allowed inside the temple. Boudnath is one of the largest stupas in the world and is an important Buddhist pilgrim center. Hanuman Dhoka is the old royal palace. The name has been derived from the statue of Hanuman placed at the entrance. The building never habited since its first construction in the 13th century AD. The building is now used mainly for royal ceremonies. You may find the Nasal Chowk, Tribhuvan Memorial Museum, Basantpur Tower, Mahendra Memorial Museum and a stone inscription of some interest. Machchendra Nath Temple is dedicated to Machchendra, the guardian of the valley. Situated in Kel Tol to the north of Durbar Square, the temple is one of the most revered both by Hindus and Buddhists alike. The white-faced image of Machchendra Nath is paraded around during the Machchendra Nath Festival in April. The Residence of the Living Goddess is an 18th century palace with beautifully carved window frames. The palace is also known as Kumari Bahal after the residence of the living goddess of Kathmandu. Kathmandu got its name from Kashthamandap Temple made out of wood of a single tree. It is the oldest surviving structure in Kathmandu although several alterations and renovations have been made to it. The temple is dedicated to Saint Gorakhnath.
